New Junior Badminton Competition

Posted by Simon Gilhooly

We have been trying to organise a junior badminton competition for some time and I'm very happy to report that we've developed a format that we think will work for everyone.

Four teams have entered this season; Chipmunks, Stour, Blackwater and Stanway. All four teams will come together at Monkwick Sports Centre on Saturday 26th November to play in a round robin format. The teams will consist of four boys and two girls and the age range is Y9 or below.

We intend that each club will take a turn to host such a match in the year giving our young players valuable team competition experience.

C & EE Community Badminton Network

Posted by Simon Gilhooly

I am pleased to announce that the Federation Committee has agreed to launch a Community Badminton Network with support from BADMINTON England to help promote our sport in the area.

The CBN will work to promote all the clubs whether they be members of the Federation or not and seek to establish a pathway for badminton players to progress from casual games with friends through to elite training. BADMINTON England will provide financial assistance for initiatives to bring new adult players into the fold. To manage the CBN we have agreed to co-opt the following people onto the Federation Development Committee; Clive Palmer (BADMINTON England Regional Development Officer, Nikki Richardson, Pennie Hackett and Simon Gilhooly.

We are hoping to list all clubs in the area on this website so please get in touch if you organise a club that is not currently shown on the Clubs page.

The first such initiative is the creation of a new social club night to be organised by Stanway Badminton Club, offering badminton on Monday nights from 8pm - 10pm for players not wishing to join a competitive club. This runs on a pay-as-you-play basis, £4 a night.

October Update

Posted by Simon Gilhooly

The first month of matches is drawing to a close and some of the divisions are beginning to take shape with some very close contests.

Men's Division 1 is looking to be very competitive with several 5-4 results posted already. Garrison have strengthened with the signing of Oscar Hackett following the demise of Colchester. Another ex-Colchester player, Martin Southgate, is helping St.Mary Madgelene push for a well deserved promotion from Division 2, early results suggest this will be a straight shoot out with Wix who are aiming for a direct return to the top-flight.

In the Mixed competition St. Osyth A and Monkwick B are the early pace setters in Division 2 but there has not been much action in Division 1. The same clubs are also leading the way in Ladies Division 2 and with two teams in both Mixed and Ladies divisions they are going to be best of friends by the end of the season!
